About |

Professor John Dwyer to discuss the government’s likely response and the opportunites for meaningful reform

The Australian Health Congress will return again to Darling Harbour on the 29th and 30th September at a critical time for the industry.  With the release of the report “A healthier future for all Australians” by the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission, we are closer than ever to real reform.

Denticare, Electronic Health Records, Mental Health, Hospital funding – everything is on the table.  What remains to be seen is which recommendations will be adopted by the government and the timeline to implement them.  This will be decided over the coming months as the government continues to consult industry on responses to the report.

The Australian Health Summit is the ideal opportunity to be involved in these discussions with representatives from all sectors present, and a significant proportion of the program devoted to interactive discussion, where all viewpoints will be heard.  There will be a strong media presence and a summary of the events proceedings will be submitted to the Department of Health and Ageing at the conclusion of the two days.

Who should attend?

Delegates attending will be health representatives from Federal and State Government departments and agencies; CEO’s, CIO’s, managers and other relevant representatives from the public and private sectors, including;
Aged Care, Hospitals, Health Insurance Providers, Research and Education Institutes, Acute and Primary Care, Mental Health Services, Regional and Remote Health Services.
This is not an event for clinicians per se – although heads of different services and hospitals will speak at the congress - but seeks to bring together the many departments, authorities and organisations dedicated to healthcare and health policy.

Themes |
  • Healthcare policy and reform – the relationship between commonwealth and state health
  • Public and private funding
  • Private health and health insurance
  • Developments to MBS and PBS
  • Accountability and performance reporting
  • Patient care and the health workforce
  • Education and public engagement
  • Health implications and provisions for an ageing Australia
  • Preventive health
  • Chronic disease management
  • e-health, innovation and technology
  • Equitable access to health care - with a particular focus on indigenous health

Speakers |

Speakers will be government ministers, department heads and industry leaders drawn from a wide variety of health services, from both public and private sectors.

A key theme of the event will be that of building relationships, both those between patient and healthcare services and between the services themselves, ensuring consistency and continuity of care.  As such there will be a number of panel discussions and interactive sessions designed to pool the knowledge present at the event.  As one delegate commented at the 2008 congress;

“Even experts, both delegates and speakers, don’t have the full picture - just their part of it”

The Australian Health Congress will seek to provide a little more of that picture.
